Frequently Asked Questions

Why Merritt MedCare?

Our family at Merritt MedCare noticed a critical lack of quality healthcare in Western North Carolina.  We experienced first hand the negative impact large companies from big cities can have on the well-being of our smaller communities.  We felt there was a need for local providers and medical staff who understood the needs of our rural Appalachian home. It was from this need Merritt MedCare was born, along with our mission statement:  Locally owned - Providers you trust - The care you deserve.

Who owns Merritt MedCare?

Merritt MedCare was started by Dr. Benjamin Gans to bring locally- owned and operated healthcare to his community in Western North Carolina.

Who are the providers at Merritt MedCare?

Dr. Benjamin Gans, D.O. and John Tucker, PA-C will be providing medical services.

What insurance does Merritt MedCare take?

We are in network with most major insurance policies, including Medicare & North Carolina Medicaid plans, as well as commercial carriers like United Health Care, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Cigna, and more. We bill as a family medicine practice and not an urgent care. Feel free to contact our office to see if we are in network with your policy.

I don’t have insurance - can I be seen?

Our self-pay price is $100 for a visit. Lab work may have an additional cost we will go over with you before being performed.

Is Merritt MedCare an urgent care?  Is it a family medicine practice?

Merritt MedCare provides scheduled family medicine appointments, as well as accepting walk-ins for non-emergency patients daily.  Our services are comparable to an urgent care clinic.

For medical emergencies, please go to your nearest emergency room.

I already have an appointment scheduled with Dr. Gans or Mr. Tucker, will it be honored?

We are working to honor all previously made appointments.  However, every patient will be required to fill out a new patient packet and have medical records transferred to Merritt MedCare even if they have been seen before by Dr. Gans or Mr. Tucker.

How do I become a patient?

You may call to make an appointment or just show up - we take walk-ins for non-emergency injuries and ailments Mon-Fri from 9am - 6 pm and Saturdays from 9 am - 1 pm. For medical emergencies, please go to your nearest emergency room.

Can I have lab work or x-rays done?

We do provide laboratory services - some labs can be done in-house and others may have to be sent out.  We can also order x-rays that you may have performed at the facility of your choosing and we will receive the results.  We hope to be able to offer in-house x-ray services soon!
